You have a hobby, something you love or ideas that you want to share? You enjoy reading blogs and would like to create your own but you’re not sure how to go about it? Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an expert to start a blog. Whether you are over 50, or a little younger, it’s an easy and fun thing to try. We explain every step you need to follow so that you can finally share your passion with the world!

First of all: What is a blog?

Basically, a blog is a website where an individual or a group of people regularly posts articles, videos, and images. A blog can be compared to an online diary or journal, as bloggers use this space to express themselves and share their passions or ideas.

On the web, you can find fashion blogs, travel blogs, cooking blogs, health and fitness advice blogs, etc. Blogging can go further than that though. In fact, some bloggers even make their blog a source of earnings! Some fashion bloggers get paid by brands to test and talk about their products on their posts.

Many bloggers are senior men and women over 50 who enjoy spending their free time or retirement sharing their hobbies with others. You can do it too!

How to create a blog?

1. Define a topic

Before you start anything, ask yourself the right questions: What do you want to share? What do you want to write about? To be consistent, the first thing you need to do is to define the main topic. Do you want to share your travel photographs, your best recipes, your poems, DIY ideas? Your blog is the opportunity to write about what you love!

2. Select a blogging platform

In order for your site to begin to take shape, you first need to decide on a blogging platform. This is where you will build your blog. You have the choice between free platforms or those you have to pay for. WordPress is the most popular and well-known option, as it’s free to use and really easy to set up a nice-looking blog with. Other platforms that you may consider using are Blogger, Tumblr or Wix.

3. Choose your blog’s name

The name of your blog is also referred as the “domain name”, which is the web address of your site (for example Take some time to really think about it and come up with an idea that you like. It needs to summarize the purpose and define the topic of your blog. The good thing is that you usually have the possibility of changing the name later on. Something that is short and easy to remember is always a winner!

If you choose free platforms like WordPress or Blogger, their brand name will be added to your blog’s name. It means that they are the owners of the blog, not you (but don’t worry you’re still in charge of everything, from the design to the writing).

If you go with the free option, your web address will look like this: or

If however, you don’t want the platform’s name included in your address and prefer to be the exclusive owner of your blog, you will need to pay a little to find a hosting provider. This can cost you around $5 to $10 per month.

4. Customize your blog

The appearance of a blog is really important. No one likes reading ugly blogs. The design must be pleasing and attractive to your readers, so that they will enjoy spending time on your beautiful site and want to visit it again.

The customizing part is a fun step and you should take some time to really enjoy finding the perfect theme for you!

Most platforms offer a large choice of themes. There are layouts that are more suitable for recipe blogs or travel blogs because they allocate a large amount of space for pictures. The look of your site should reflect your personality, as well as what the blog is about.

After you click on the design of your preference, you can then customize and change details like the color or the font. If your change your mind, you can still modify the theme later on (try not to alter things too much though – readers enjoy consistency!).

5. Add articles and images

Finally, you can add your delicious apple pie recipe or your amazing photographs of your last trip to Mexico! Try to regularly add new content to your blog, so that your readers keep visiting and reading your posts. It’s best to add at least one new post every week or so. Another little piece of advice: readers’ eyes tend to prefer “light” writing that contains images and small paragraphs.

6. Share your posts

Facebook, Twitter, Google + or Pinterest – it’s vital to make use of the social networks! Therefore, make sure to share those great posts you spent time writing with the world. You might collect some precious “likes” or comments that will perhaps lead you to start a conversation with interesting people!
